Words by Rachel Burke – I make. You wear it
Listening to podcasts is the flavour of the moment – and for good reason! Podcasts are deliciously accessible on our smart phones and lend themselves to exploring niche topics and unique modes of storytelling…literally name a subject, and there will invariably be a podcast about it. Heck, name a podcast and there will probably be a podcast about that podcast! This buffet of options can, at times, seem overwhelming – there are so many out there! Sometimes it can be hard to know where to begin. So, we have decided to put together a diverse podcast plan to see you through 7 days and get you started with some of the best…
Monday – Design Matters
Start the week with some serious chat about all things (and we mean all things) design. From architects to web designers, storybook writers to art directors, host Debra Millman skilfully interviews a different designer each episode. A word of caution about this podcast: it is incredibly inspiring! Can lead to immense daydreaming and design-oriented fantasies.
Tuesday – The Mystery Show
Step aside Nancy Drew, there is a new detective in town: Starlee Kine! Each episode of this podcast sees Starlee solve a different, mostly strange and obscure, mystery. This podcast is so engaging and also great for inspiring you to think about the mysteries that appear in your own life. Devastatingly, this podcast will not be returning for a second season, however the 6 episodes that do exist are incredibly spesh and engaging. Not to be missed!
Wednesday – The Dollop
Sometimes you just need some giggles to see you through hump day. The Dollop is both hilarious and informative. Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds talk all things history, but in a very silly way. I have actually cry-laughed awkwardly at my desk listening to this show. It’s really a very good time.
Thursday – Love and Radio
This one doesn’t focus on any one subject in particular, but instead covers an eclectic range of topics ‘’from the seedy to the sublime”. This podcast is SO great for future conversation-ing, as some of the stories told are truly bizarre and memorable…also as the topics are so diverse this podcast really is the gift that keeps on giving – you won’t get bored, I promise!
Friday – Women Of The Hour
It’s the end of the week, so why not treat yourself to a wine and a friendly sit down with none other than Lena Dunham. Sure, Dunham is controversial, and she has (on occasion) been criticised for a few flip comments said on this very podcast. But I find her naivety and relaxed interview/storytelling style just so damn likeable, and I love that she focuses on real, sometimes subversive, issues. But make up your own mind and have a listen!
Saturday – Serial
I put this one on the weekend, because you just might have to BINGE LISTEN to the entire series in one sitting…and you wouldn’t want pesky work to get in the way of that. This is a true-crime podcast about Adnan Syed, who is currently in prison for the alleged murder of Hae Min Lee. Adnan has always maintained his innocence and this podcast is on a quest for answers to find out what really happened.
Sunday – Moma Talks: Conversations
If you can’t make it to the gallery on a Sunday, get the gallery to come to you. This is a great lecture series with artists, curators and scholars discussing all things modern and contemporary art.
So there you have it! A balanced serve of podcast recommendations to get you started on what will undoubtedly be a love affair with the audio world!
